Cactus Fair To Be Celebrated In Baldwin Park

For the third consecutive year, in Baldwin Park will host the Cactus Fair, an event with the objective to promote and educate the community about the medicinal and healing properties of this famous vegetable.

The event will be held this Sunday, August 19, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., in the restaurant's parking lot at 4291 Maine Ave.

"Our mission is to celebrate and promote the health benefits of cactus, pre-Hispanic foods, and culture through a community health event encouraging a lifestyle of wellness," explained the organizers on their website.

This year, the event will also have a presentation about Chia seeds, considered to be a "super food" nutrition-wise, and free health check-ups will also be available.

Artists from Latin America and cultural groups from Mexico, Guatemala and Argentina will provide entertainment.

According to Mark Quan, responsible for the event's marketing, the Queen and King of the event will be popular actors Angelica Vale and Esaí Morales.

Chef Juan Mondragón, , will delight the public with his various culinary creations.

The cactus is a vegetable that has been used frequently since pre-Columbian times in Mesoamerica, particularly in Mexico.

Some of the properties of this plant include glucose control for people with diabetes and cholesterol control, according to doctor Andrew Weil.
