SPCA in Dire Need of Food for its Animals

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Los Angeles is appealing for pet food donations to boost reserves said to be "alarmingly low" this holiday season.

According to spcaLA President Madeline Bernstein, the organization's greatest need is for dog food, both wet and dry, but supplies of cat and kitten food as well as puppy food are also running low.

Donations can be dropped off during business hours at spcaLA's locations in Long Beach, Hawthorne and Los Angeles.

"The number of animals coming into the shelters continues to rise, yet food donations are not keeping up with the increase," Bernstein said.

The organization uses an average of 30,000 pounds of pet food a year. Donations from pet food companies, big-box stores and corporations have not recovered from the recession, according to spcaLA.
