Benicia Selects New City Manager
The City Council's pick is a graduate of Benicia High School.
BENICIA — The Benicia City Council has named Mario Giuliani to serve as its new city manager.
Giuliani, who was serving as Benicia's interim city manager, was selected after the retirement of former city manager Erik Upson, city officials announced Thursday.
Giuliani, a 30-year resident of Benicia and graduate of Benicia High School, said he was humbled and grateful for the decision.

"To be appointed as the City Manager in the community in which I grew up and where I am now raising my children is the honor of my life. I am deeply committed to the success of our town and confident that this community will overcome the challenges that are ahead to put Benicia on a path to prosperity," he said in a statement.
Benicia Mayor Steve Young commended Giuliani for "proposing bold steps for both expense reduction and revenue generation" as the city experiences financial challenges.

"The Council is happy and confident in moving forward with Mario as our next City Manager," Young said.
According to Benicia officials, a contract agreement for the city manager position will be considered at a City Council meeting on Aug. 15.
