Chimney Fire Damages Benicia Renovation

BENICIA - Firefighters extinguished a one-alarm blaze in a vacant Benicia residence under renovation after a chimney fire spread to the attic Wednesday afternoon.

Crews were dispatched to a smoke investigation in the 700 block of Military East at 3:16 p.m.

Arriving crews found a chimney fire spreading to the attic of a two-story residence at 782 Military East.

The fire had traveled into a secondary attic, and firefighters had to cut a vent in the roof to extinguish it.

Investigators determined that construction workers had been burning wood products in the vacant residence's fireplace, which led to the chimney fire.

There were no injuries reported, and there was no damage to adjoining homes.

Information about the extent of the damage was not immediately available.
