Driver Killed In Crash Near Carquinez Bridge Identified As Solano County Man

SOLANO COUNTY, CA -- The Solano County coroner's office has identified a driver who died in a solo vehicle crash in Vallejo Saturday near the Carquinez Bridge toll plaza as Whitney Deno Gaunt, 56, of Vallejo.

Gaunt was driving a 1999 Honda west on Interstate Highway 80 around 6:30 a.m. on May 20 when he lost control of the vehicle and crashed into the impact barrier at the entrance to the tool booth, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Honda then side-swiped a concrete wall on the left side of the toll booth and a chain link fence on the south edge of westbound I-80, the CHP said. The vehicle came to rest in the toll plaza parking lot, and
witnesses found Gaunt unconscious and in his seatbelt.

He was pronounced dead at 7:06 a.m. Saturday at Kaiser Permanente Vallejo Medical Center, according to the coroner's office.

The collision is under investigation, the CHP said.
