Student Arrested In Threat Against Benicia High School: Police

Police identified and arrested the source of a threat posted to the social media page, Benicia High Confessions.

BENICIA, CA — The Benicia Police Department announced an arrest Thursday in connection with a threat made on social media against Benicia High School.

"There is no active shooter incident at the Benicia High School," Benicia police said on Twitter at 12:08 p.m. Thursday. "A threat was posted on social media this morning, but there is no indication that it is credible at this point. Our detectives are actively investigating the source of the threat."

In a follow-up tweet at 12:55 p.m., Benicia police said a 16-year-old student was believed to be the author of the threat and was arrested.

"Our detectives have identified a 16-year-old student to be the author of the threat posted on social media this morning," Benicia police said. "He was arrested, & will be booked the juvenile hall. Family members are cooperating with the investigation."

According to a statement from Benicia Unified School District Superintendent Charles Young, the suspected threat was submitted to the Instagram page, "Benicia High Confessions."

"... First off, there is no active shooter on the Benicia High School Campus," Young said. "The anonymous post contained an alleged threat towards BHS. The Instagram page has been taken down since this was posted."

There was an increased police presence at the school Thursday as authorities worked to identify the source of the threat.

"As a result of their investigation, the Benicia Police Department reconfirmed that there was never a legitimate threat to the safety of the students and staff at our schools," Young said. "We are grateful for the diligence and expertise of our Police Department and to our students, staff, and community for their understanding and support. During these scary and difficult times, it is through partnering with our community that helps us create a safe learning environment for our students and staff."
