UPDATE: SWAT Team Enters Vallejo Home: Neighbor Describes 'Battle Zone' Atmosphere

A police SWAT team has entered a home near Sutter and Illinois streets in Vallejo where a man appeared to be holed up this afternoon, bringing to an end a tense standoff that shut down the entire neighborhood, a resident said.

Police have not released details about the incident, but neighbor Tracie Frost, who lives on Illinois Street near that intersection, said the man who appeared to be the focus of the police activity was in a home in the 1800 block of Sutter Street.

She said elderly and disabled people live at the home, which she can see from her house. Frost said police started firing tear gas into the home at about 2:45 p.m.

She said at about 3:20 p.m. that police had just thrown what may have been a flash-bang device into the home, and then entered the residence.  

Meanwhile, emergency medical responders waited nearby with a gurney. A short time later, they put the empty gurney back into an ambulance, Frost said.

She said she did not see police take anyone out of the house, which had been cordoned off with crime-scene tape.

Police have not yet confirmed reports that the suspect fired at least one shot at police.  

Homes in the area were evacuated during the standoff, and Frost and her family took shelter in the back of their home for about two hours, Frost said.

Frost said police snipers were on the roof of her house and other homes in the area, and described the scene as similar to a "battle zone."
