BENICIA, CA — When times are tough, heroes emerge. We all know someone who's making a difference right now as we live through unprecedented times. Here at Patch, we've launched an initiative to help recognize these everyday heroes.
This submission comes from Katrina Salas of Martinez, who nominated her sister.

Melanie Buck
Is the nominee considered an "essential worker"?:
Yes
What does the nominee do for work?:
Principal of Joe Henderson Elementary School in Benicia
Why do you believe the nominee should be recognized or honored?
Melanie Buck has dedicated her life to ensuring that all children have equal access to education. She is the equity warrior! When the Shelter at Home was announced, Melanie and the Henderson Hound team ensured that each child had access to the equipment they needed for distance learning.
We speak every day, and she's told me many times since mid-March that she is so, so proud of her teachers at Joe Henderson. They are all working very hard, long hours to keep the children engaged as they continue to learn, even with the distractions they have at home. Worrying that every child's home situation is different during this time (essential workers, food insecurity, stress, etc.), and that they may not all have an equal chance at academic success, definitely keeps her awake at night.
When I go out in Benicia with Melanie and her daughter Samantha, we're always recognized ("What's Up, Mrs. Buck?"). I tease her for being the town celebrity, but secretly I'm so very proud of my little sister. She's definitely a local hero during this pandemic, but she's always been my hero.
What's one thing you want everyone to know about your hero?:
Family is everything to Melanie. She's is definitely the "cool aunt" to my kids. Her sister and 10-year-old daughter are her best friends and camping is her happy place.
Thank you for all you do, Melanie!
