The Best Chili in Benicia is Made By...

Judges blind-tasted nineteen different creations from Chili Challengers and judged on taste, appearance, aroma, consistency, and creativity.

Benicia Main Street is proud to announce the winners of the 2nd Annual Great Bowls of Chili Challenge, held on March 23rd at the Benicia Clock Tower.

Benicia's Great Bowls of Chili Challege was held last weekend, and the winners have been crowned. 

"Judges blind-tasted nineteen different creations from Chili Challengers and judged on taste, appearance, aroma, consistency, and creativity," according to Benicia Main Street. "The first place winners received $100 in Downtown Dollars and a trophy."

  • 1st Place: Flavor Catering for their Pulled Pork Pandemonium recipe,
  • 1st Place (Vegetarian): Benicia Chili Heads for their Beyond Beef Belief recipe
  • 1st Place (Most Creative): The Rellik Tavern for their Raven Road Kill recipe.

For the second year in a row, People’s Choice crowned The Rellik Tavern’s Raven Road Kill as a standout creation, containing an intoxicatingly good combination of whisky smoked wild boar, free range buffalo, maple cured bacon, Guinness stout, fire roasted tomatoes, caramelized onions, roasted garlic, peppers, French cocoa powder, and assorted chili powders.  The Rellik Tavern again left with the traveling trophy and an invitation to come back to defend their title at next year’s Chili Challenge.

Many Benicia businesses and Benicia organizations competed as Chili Challengers this year and Benicia Main Street thanks them for their participation in this annual fundraiser, including The Rellik Tavern, First St. Café, Rookies Sports Bar & Grill, The Loft Wine Bar, Benicia Magazine, Soroptimist International of Benicia with Sandoval’s Mexican Food, Sprankle’s Deli, Got Plate Lunch Food Truck, Vet’s Club, Benicia Yacht Club, Benicia Volunteer Fire Fighters, BUSD Healthy Cooking with Kids, and the Knights of Columbus.

The three-judge panel consisted of Marc Ethier of the Benicia Herald, Ernie Gutierrez of the Veterans of Benicia, and Kelly Cantrell-Dillingham of First American Title.
