Vallejo Firefighter Remembers Colleague Step By Step

A firefighter representing the Vallejo Fire Department climbed 1,311 steps of a Seattle skyscraper on Sunday in honor of a fallen colleague.

VALLEJO - A firefighter representing the Vallejo Fire Department climbed 1,311 steps of a Seattle skyscraper on Sunday in honor of a fallen colleague.

Brett Smith climbed the steps to honor Capt. Scott Carnevale of the Alameda Fire Department at the 25th Annual Scott Firefighter Stair Climb.

Carnevale passed away on January 3, 2011, from job-related cancer.

According to fire officials, Smith and Carnevale were best friends and Smith still wear's Carnevale's protective facemask while out on fire calls in Vallejo.

The stair-climbing competition takes place annually at the Columbia Center, the second-tallest building west of the Mississippi River, and raises money for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, according to event organizers.
