Officers with the Berkeley Police Department were called to the party just before 11:30 p.m. and found Salinas unresponsive in the pool. He was taken to a local hospital in critical condition and died a few days later, police said.
Police did not say how the student ended up in the pool. It appears Salinas and other underage people had been drinking at the party, according to police. No foul play is suspected at this time, police said.

Around 300 people attended the event, which exceeded the 200-person limit set by the city of Berkeley regarding indoor entertainment events, police said. The fraternity was issued a citation for the violation and was also issued a civil notice violation for having a loud and unruly gathering, which was deemed a public nuisance, police said.
The fraternity safety coordinator is also being accused of providing alcohol to minors, and the case has been sent to the Alameda County District Attorney's Office for review, police said. It's unclear whether the safety coordinator has been charged with any crime.
Authorities initially believed that Salinas was a member of the frat, but the organization's leader later said the 19-year-old was not, according to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle.
The fraternity's Cal chapter was suspended following Salinas' drowning, according to the report.
