Berkeley Elementary School Named California Distinguished School
An elementary school in Berkeley was honored by the state for academic excellence and a positive school climate.
BERKELEY, CA —John Muir Elementary School in Berkeley was one of 336 elementary schools across the state to be named as a 2025 California Distinguished School, the California Department of Education announced.
The CDE selected elementary schools based on their performance on criteria indicated on 2024 Dashboard, which include academic excellence, ensuring a positive school climate, and closing the academic achievement gap.
John Muir was the only school in Berkeley Unified School District honored this year.

“It is my pleasure to honor and recognize these 336 elementary schools for their efforts to provide exemplary public education to all students,” California Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond said in a statement.

“Excellent elementary schools play a critical role in the life outcomes of our young people. This year’s California Distinguished Schools celebration provides us with an opportunity to recognize the hard work of our elementary educators and school staff who help our students discover passions and experiences that will propel them.”
California Distinguished Schools will be honored in Anaheim in May.
