Berkeley Nonprofit News Outlet Announces Expansion

Berkeleyside on Tuesday announced the hiring of journalists Ximena Natera and Iris Kwok.

BERKELEY, CA — A Berkeley nonprofit digital news outlet announced plans for expanded coverage with the hiring of two additional journalists.

Berkeleyside on Tuesday announced the hiring of Ximena Natera and Iris Kwok.

Natera will be the publication's first staff photographer, and Kwok will cover the climate beat.

Natera is from Mexico City and has covered cartel violence and documented human rights violations against migrants.

Kwok served as deputy news editor at the Daily Cal before graduating from UC Berkeley. Her bylines have appeared in KQED and The San Francisco Chronicle, among other publications.

The June 1 additions of Natera and Kwok will bring Berkeleyside’s editorial staff to eight, the publication said.

“The addition of these two positions will be a leap forward for Berkeleyside,” Berkeleyside Editor-in-Chief Pamela Turntine said.

“Ximena and Iris’ work will deepen our coverage of Berkeley, providing much needed reporting on the impact of the climate crisis on our city and more of the type of visual journalism our readers have long told us they appreciate.”
