Berkeley Takes to the Streets for National Night Out

A total of 53 community groups will host block parties in Berkeley tonight as part of the anti-crime campaign.

Berkeley will celebrate the 28th annual Tuesday night, with block parties and neighborhood events taking place in 53 communities across the city. According to the Berkeley Police Department, the number of groups participating makes this year's National Night Out the biggest in recent years.

"What had started many years ago as a unique crime and drug prevention event has evolved in the City of Berkeley into a celebration of community," said Sgt. Mary Kusmiss in a statement. "Members of City of Berkeley staff, the Police and Fire Departments welcome you to take an evening to gather with neighbors and friends – enjoy the company and celebrate each other. If your neighborhood has not organized, bring some food or fun to contribute and join a celebration near you."

Neighborhood groups are planning a range of events from potlucks, talent shows and picnics, to ice cream socials, kids parades, neighborhood clean-ups and music performances. Police and city officials are expected to attend the gatherings taking place througout Berkeley.
