DUI checkpoint locations are selected based on reported DUI crashes, police said.

The stated goal of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.

According to the City of Berkeley 2020-2021 Vision Zero Annual Report, both San Pablo Avenue and Cedar Street are described as high-injury streets.

Officers from the Albany PD, Piedmont PD, UC Berkeley PD, and volunteers from Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) assisted Berkeley police.

Funding for the checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
