BERKELEY, CA — An open bottle of booze, a handgun in the back seat — police never know what they'll find when investigating a simple traffic crash.

Shortly after midnight on May 29, Berkeley Police officers investigated a report of a crash at the corner of Adeline Street and Ashby Avenue. They found a vehicle that had collided with a fence.

Inside, officers discovered that the driver and passenger were asleep in the front seats near an open container of booze.

The driver was arrested after failing a series of sobriety tests.

A check of the vehicle's contents before it was towed turned up a surprise: a loaded handgun in the backseat.
