Quiet Berkeley Block Rocked By Deadly Late-Night Scooter Crash (hoodline.com) — A man was killed late Saturday night in a solo scooter crash on California Street near Addison in Berkeley, despite extensive life-saving efforts by neighbors, police, and firefighters. Berkeley police and the Fatal Accident Investigation Team, along with the Alameda County coroner, are still investigating what caused the deadly incident and say the case remains active.
   

2. Cal keeps winning streak going with win over Northwestern State (kentucky.com) — Cal men’s basketball extended its nonconference winning streak to seven games with a 79-70 victory over Northwestern State at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, highlighted by 25 points from sharpshooter John Camden. The Golden Bears, now 10-1, rallied late behind Dai Dai Ames and Lee Dort to secure their longest win streak since 2016, giving local fans reason to watch this resurgent squad.
   

3. The Bay Lights Are Back: SF's Iconic Bay Bridge Light Installation Will Shimmer With Twice As Many LEDs In Early 2026 (secretsanfrancisco.com) — Berkeley residents will soon be able to see the revived Bay Lights 360 shimmering on both sides of the Bay Bridge starting in early 2026. The expanded installation will feature twice as many LEDs, making the abstract light patterns visible from Berkeley, Oakland, and Emeryville, as well as to drivers crossing the bridge.
   

4. For the First Time, AI Analyzes Language as Well as a Human Expert (wired.com subscription) — UC Berkeley linguist Gašper Beguš and a colleague who earned a Berkeley PhD helped show that a cutting-edge AI model can analyze language with graduate-level skill. Their tests on sentence structure, ambiguity, and invented mini-languages suggest AI may be chipping away at what once seemed like uniquely human linguistic abilities.
   

5. Dozens Rally In SF Demanding Animal Rights Activist Zoe Rosenberg Be Released From Jail (patch.com) — A UC Berkeley student, Zoe Rosenberg, is serving a 90-day sentence in Sonoma County after being convicted for entering a Petaluma poultry farm, sparking Bay Area protests. Animal rights group Direct Action Everywhere rallied in San Francisco and other cities, arguing she was rescuing mistreated chickens and warning that her Type 1 diabetes makes incarceration especially risky.
