Suspect In Sereinat’e Henderson’s 2020 Shooting Death Arrested

BERKELEY, CA — A suspect was arrested Monday in connection with the 2020 fatal shooting of a 19-year-old Berkeley woman, police said.

The suspect in Sereinat’e Henderson’s killing was identified by authorities as 21-year-old Charles Jones.

Alameda County prosecutors on Wednesday charged Jones with murder, shooting at an occupied vehicle, attempted murder, assault with a semiautomatic firearm, possession of firearm by a felon, as well as a number of criminal enhancements, police said.

Jones at the time of his arrest was in custody at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin in connection with a gang-related Berkeley shooting, police said.

Henderson on the night of Oct. 21, 2020, was driving with other family members including her 1-year-old son in the area of Prince and Ellis streets when a gunman opened fire on her vehicle, police said.

Henderson was pronounced dead after being taken to a local hospital.

She was pregnant with her second child at the time of the shooting.

The city of Berkeley in the aftermath of Henderson’s killing offered a a $50,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for her death.

“The tragic loss of Sereinat’e caused emotional pain and suffering to her family, loved ones and the entire Berkeley community,” the Berkeley Police Department said in a statement.

“The Berkeley Police Department shares in the senseless loss of this young mother to gun violence and will continue to work to reduce and prevent gun crimes that threaten the safety of our community.”
