Telegraph Avenue Remains Closed Due to Building Fire

Telegraph Avenue between Dwight and Channing is closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic and could remain closed into next week, officials say.

Shoppers hoping to stroll along Telegraph Avenue Saturday afternoon were met by yellow police tape blocking the street from Dwight Way up to Channing Way. 

Firefighters were still working on the building on Haste Street that remained smouldering . City officials have red-tagged the five-story, 39-unit building at 2441 Haste Street, saying it is unsafe to enter.

The streets surrounding the building, along Telegraph Avenue and up and down a small portion of Haste Street, remains closed to vehicles and pedestrians. The area could be blocked off for the next few days, officials said.

For the residents who were evacuated from the building, many found temporary housing quickly, Bay City News reports, with the Red Cross on hand to assist.

Residents of the building are being urged to call (510) 981-5900 and provide their name, phone number and apartment unit number, so that the city can evaluate and coordinate their needs with the Red Cross and the University.
