Transient, 56, Dies Next to North Berkeley Drugstore

A 56-year-old man died on the sidewalk next to CVS Pharmacy in North Berkeley on Tuesday, authorities said.

He was identified by the Alameda County Coroner's Bureau as Paul McComas of Oakland.

Berkeley police received a report of man in distress on the sidewalk along Shattuck Avenue next to the west wall of CVS about 12:30 p.m., said Berkeley Police Officer Jamie Perkins.

Berkeley Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and confirmed the death, Perkins said. She said there was "nothing suspicious about the death."

The Berkeley police officer who patrols that neighborhood recognized the man as as transient seen in the area before, Perkins said.
