New Safeway Opens Its Doors
Friday was the grand opening of Burlingame's new Safeway store.
Over the past year, Burlingame’s Safeway has , been torn down and been built back up again. On Friday, the new Safeway celebrated its grand opening in Burlingame, completing a project almost 14 years in the making.
"I think everyone's been looking forward to a new store," Maureen Brooks, Burlingame planning manager, told Patch before construction began.
The store closed its doors to customers on Sept. 18, 2010. Construction began on the new Safeway in January 2011, and it was originally slated to open in August.

on whether or not to tear down and rebuild the Safeway, the city council approved the project at its Feb. 1, 2010 meeting. The project spans 1420-1450 Howard Ave. and 249 Primrose Rd.
The 45,645-square-foot space includes 12,428 square feet of retail space on the ground floor, 5,460 square feet of office space above and boasts rooftop parking. The Wells Fargo was remodeled as part of the project.

The project includes an adjacent commerical building where retailers such as Yogurtland, Five Guys Burgers, Pizza My Heart and will soon open.
