2 Storms Pose Flood Risk To Calabasas: Where To Find Sandbags

CALABASAS, CA — As the first in a series of storms is expected to roll into Los Angeles County Wednesday morning, forecasters are warning that flash floods could be a possibility.

The rain is expected to hit LA County by 5 a.m. Thursday, when a half-inch of rain per hour is expected to fall. Forecasters say foothills and mountains can expect to receive 3 to 5 inches total Thursday and possibly into Friday morning, with 1.5 to 3 inches in other areas of the county, according to the National Weather Service.

"Rain rates in very localized areas could be high enough to require a flash flood warning," the NWS said.

A high surf advisory for Malibu and other parts of the coast will be in effect from 2 a.m. Thursday to 6 p.m. Saturday.

Sandbags, which can be used to divert water in flood-prone properties, are available to Calabasas residents at local Los Angeles County Fire stations.

All of the fire stations in Calabasas and Agoura Hills were listed as having sand and bags available at noon Wednesday.

Winds between 20 and 50 mph will be common across SoCal, with the strongest gusts in the mountains and deserts, the NWS said.

Drier weather is expected in most parts of LA County Friday and Saturday, before a second, likely stronger storm is expected to roll in Sunday.

Forecasters say this storm has a "large range of outcomes" and it's too early to offer a detailed forecast. But one outcome could include 12 to 24 hours of steady rain and strong winds. The storm could bring a high risk of flooding, the NWS said.
