'Coldest Night Of The Season:' Freeze Warning Issued For Calabasas

Frigid overnight temperatures could be cold enough to kill sensitive plants and pose a hypothermia risk to people and animals, the NWS said.

CALABASAS, CA — This weekend's windy storm is on its way out of Southern California with one parting gift: The National Weather Service has issued a Freeze Warning for Calabasas that's in effect early Tuesday morning.

"A dry and cold air mass left behind in the wake of this past weekend's storm will continue below-normal temperatures and cold overnight low temperatures," the NWS wrote Monday. "With clear skies, light winds, and a very dry and cold airmass in place, tonight may be the coldest night of the season so far."

The Freeze Warning is in effect for parts of Los Angeles and Ventura counties, including Calabasas and the west San Fernando Valley, from 1 a.m. to 10 a.m. Tuesday. There's a potential for temperatures to hit 29-31 degrees for at least two hours, according to the NWS.

Forecasters warn that the frost will kill crops and other sensitive vegetation and that hypothermia can result in people and animals who are exposed to the cold for extended periods.

"Take steps now to protect tender plants from the cold. Plan for extra time to defrost vehicle windshields," the NWS said.

Temperatures are expected to warm slightly in inland areas Tuesday, reaching the mid 60s in the Valley. A new weather pattern enters the area Thursday, which could bring temperatures 6 to 12 degrees below normal, according to the NWS.

"This will be another moisture-starved system, so expect any precipitation to be on the light side," the NWS said.
