A Taste of the Vineyard in the Orchard City

Campbell's Fall Wine Walk kicks off tonight.

Downtown Campbell shops will stay open late Wednesday night, and winemakers from 35 wineries will be pouring.

It's the fourth Campbell Wine Walk, and this year's event has something  new in store for both enthusiasts and first-timers.

", we had wine distributors, not winemakers, pouring," says Sonya Paz, Campbell business owner, Downtown Campbell Business Association board member and the event co-chairwoman and promoter. "When you go to an art walk, you want to meet the artist. Tonight, you will get a chance to meet the winemakers, get a chance to hear their story."

Not only will the winemakers be on hand to share the processes and histories of their particular wines and wineries, but there will also be new retailers to check out downtown.

Both and will have their doors open and will host wineries. There are also more wineries from the Santa Cruz and Livermore areas this year.

"This is our fourth one, and there are many areas to improve," Paz says. "But we have a great committee, and it should be just a really good time."

The streets are not closed off, so wine must be consumed inside. Designated drivers and friends are welcomed but only those with glasses and wristbands will be able to taste the wines.

"That’s what keeps ticket price low," Paz says. "The good thing is that it's only an ounce. You drink or discard and move to the next one. It's more lively and fun this way. It's an upscale event."

Along with the late hours for retailers and wine tastings, there will also be artists on the streets selling their artwork as well as live music on every block. Volunteers will be at hand to answer general questions or to point visitors to particular wineries.

"It's a fun and flavorful evening," Paz says. "People can get to know retail stores they may never have gone into before. This is a nice way to show visitors how we (Campbell) have grown and improved in the last few years."

Tickets are still available, but only at the door. Paz suggests folks show up early. Last year, the tickets sold out by 7 p.m.

"Our online ticket sales are phenomenal," she says. "We're hoping tonight will be no different."
