The Great Shake Out happens today at 10:20 a.m.

Earthquake preparedness is part of life in California, especially in Silicon Valley.

The Great California Shake Out takes place today, Oct. 20 at 10:20 a.m. The idea behind this is for everyone to drop, cover and hold for at least 60 seconds at that time, no matter where they are to bring awareness to earthquake preparedness.

Earlier this week, the anniversary of the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake was remembered, and the damage it left in its wake.

As part of the ShakeOut, there are 127 individuals or families registered in Santa Clara County for the 2011 Great California ShakeOut, with a total of 373 participants.
