Armed Denny's Standoff Suspect Identified By Campbell Police

The man who kept police and an entire Campbell neighborhood at bay in an almost half-day standoff has been identified as a transient.

CAMPBELL, CA -- A 37-year-old transient was identified Monday as the man who engaged Campbell police in an armed standoff at the Denny's on South Bascom Avenue when he pulled a gun on a restaurant employee in the parking lot.

Police also said Saunray Winchester tossed a cup of coffee at the employee before walking back inside to an emptied restaurant as officers dispatched employees to come out. For more than 11 hours, the man refused to communicate with officers from a crisis negotiations unit and SWAT team brought in to flush out the man from the 2060 South Bascom Ave. eatery.

The major thoroughfare near downtown was closed between East Campbell Avenue to the north to Dry Creek Road to the south -- attracting scores of onlookers to view the spectacle.
