CAMPBELL, CA — Sergio Rubio Gonzalez, a 60-year-old Santa Clara man, has been identified as the victim of a fiery car crash in Campbell last week, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.
California Highway Patrol officials responded to the two-car crash on southbound Highway 17 just south of East Hamilton Avenue at 9:33 p.m. on July 23.

Gonzalez's Ford Mustang became disabled and a Toyota crashed into it, unable to stop in time, according to the CHP. Officer Ross Lee said officers do not yet know why the Ford became disabled.

The force of the impact caused both cars to catch on fire and the Ford became engulfed in flames, according to the CHP. Multiple "heroic" bystanders tried to remove Gonzalez from his car but were unable to save him, CHP officials said.
