Come In From Cold, Wet Weather, Santa Clara Co. Asks All Citizens

Santa Clara County's Office of Supportive Housing has extended the time period for the shelters to be open.

CAMPBELL, CA -- The Santa Clara County Office of Supportive Housing is extending the expanded shelter services and warming centers through the morning of Jan. 8 due to the National Weather Service forecast of cold overnight temperatures and weekend rain. The city of San Jose will continue to provide Overnight Warming Locations for the same time period.

“The cold temperatures accompanied by rain can be very dangerous for people living on the streets, in vehicles or motor homes. Elderly persons and those with pre-existing medical conditions are also vulnerable to the cold,” said Michelle Covert, from the county’s Office of Supportive Housing. “We encourage anyone who needs a warm place to stay to take advantage of warming centers and shelters, and we encourage residents to check in on elderly family, friends and neighbors and those with medical conditions to ensure they are warm and safe.”

With temperatures that have dipped in the 30s, the county's Supportive Housing division expanded the number of beds and extended the hours at shelters throughout the region from a week ago.
