Deputies Crash During Weekend Chase In San Jose, 1 Arrested

One deputy chasing a stolen SUV collided with a bystander's vehicle, and the suspect hit another patrol car on purpose, authorities said.

SAN JOSE, CA — One deputy hit a bystander's vehicle and another's was struck by a suspect during a police chase Sunday in San Jose, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Officials said the pursuit began after deputies tried to pull over a gold Lexus for speeding near Berryessa Road and North Capitol Avenue shortly after 12:30 p.m. Sunday. The driver fled in the stolen SUV, leading deputies on a chase throughout the Eastside of San Jose, according to the sheriff's office.

During the chase, one of the deputies' vehicles collided with an SUV at King Road and Commodore Drive. The sheriff's office said the vehicle's three occupants were taken to the hospital as a precaution and later released. The deputy suffered minor injuries.

Later in the pursuit, officials said the suspect's SUV hit another patrol car. Deputies deployed spike strips to immobilize the vehicle, and the driver attempted to run from the scene but was caught and arrested.

The sheriff's office identified the suspect as Thomas Thach, 24, and booked him into jail on suspicion of driving a stolen vehicle, assault with a deadly weapon, evading a police officer, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest.
