Fatal Campbell Hwy 17 Crash: Bystanders Tried To Rescue Driver

CAMPBELL, CA — California Highway Patrol officials released new information about a fatal crash Monday night in Campbell that caused a fire on state Highway 17. Officers went to the area of southbound Highway 17 just south of East Hamilton Avenue at 9:33 p.m. to reports of a two-vehicle collision.

A Ford Mustang became disabled for some reason and a Toyota crashed into it, unable to stop in time, according to the CHP.

The force of the impact caused both to catch on fire and the Ford became engulfed in flames, according to the CHP. Multiple "heroic" bystanders attempted to extricate a 60-year-old man from the Ford but were unable to save him, according to the CHP.

The Toyota's driver did not suffer any injuries and was able to help extricate his passengers.

Two other people suffered major injuries while a third suffered minor injuries, according to the CHP. All were taken to the Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.

The Santa Clara County medical examiner's office will release the identity of the 60-year-old man after contacting his next of kin.
