Multiple Crashes, Downed Trees, Mudslides, Obstacles: What Next?

South Bay weather continued to wreak havoc for motorists, including the landslide on State Route 17 and a myriad crashes and obstructions.

SAN JOSE, CA -- It's like Mother Nature has played a game of chicken. But the multiple issues that South Bay residents and motorists have faced just to get to work over the last two days is staggering.

To put it bluntly, if you don't need to drive, don't.

At least eight crashes, five downed trees and power lines as well as about a dozen areas of delays mixed with two disabled vehicles - one a big rig - have provided a hefty source of frustration for people trying to get around. That's not even counting the dozen or so obstructions ranging from debris and car parts to mud and water dotting a landscape that resembles a driving war zone.

In Los Gatos, Shannon Rd. is closed between Cerro Vista Dr. and Happy Acres Dr. due to more downed trees and utility lines. The closure will remain in effect through Friday at noon. Vehicles can access Happy Acres Drive from westbound Shannon Road and Cerro Vista Drive from eastbound Shannon Road.

Adding to its notorious reputation for having traffic problems, SR-17 is also home to a landslide that has made the commute slow going on the busy link between the coast and South Bay. The southbound right lane remains closed.

A severe traffic alert was issued by CHP on State Route 35 in both directions between Alpine Road and SR-9.

Adding to the treacherous conditions, high winds that have lasted into the second day added to the slow going for drivers negotiating the east- and westbound sides of State Route 84 over the Dumbarton Bridge from Menlo Park to Fremont.
