Historic Building Replaced By New Science Complex Stays At SJSU

Once known as the Scheller House, the San Jose State University Associated Students House will find new digs one mile away on campus.

SAN JOSE, CA -- It's already been proven San Jose State University can move mountains for the educational pursuits of its students and Olympic dreams of its athletes.

Now it will be move a building -- a historic one at that.

Once known as the Scheller House, the Associated Students House is going to a new location on campus this weekend in order to preserve its heritage and make way for an eight-story, $181 million science complex. The campus landmark was designed by renowned San Jose artist Theodore Lenzen and was built in 1904.

Weighing in at more than 400,000 pounds and spanning over 6,500 square foot, the structure's one-mile transport will not be an easy task that will happen overnight or even quickly. In fact, the move will happen during the day, so spectators could watch the spectacle. It's anticipated to take between six eight hours starting at 7 a.m. on Saturday.

The house is currently located near the SJSU gate at 4th and San Carlos streets. After Saturday night, it will reside at the parking lot 4 near the corner of E. San Antonio and S. 10th streets, the latter being the entrance.

The following are street closures during the move:

  • 4th Street between San Fernando and San Carlos streets
  • San Fernando Street between 4th and 9th streets

The sidewalks will remain open at the time.
