This week's questions from Campbell Patch readers were answered by Campbell Police Captain Dave Carmichael.
Q: Is it illegal to warn people of speed traps? For example, when people flash their lights to warn motorists that a police car is hiding ahead, or posting something on say Facebook with the location of the trap?
Our primary goal in conducting traffic enforcement is to increase safety by ensuring compliance with the law. We encourage everyone to notify their friends and family if they see us working speed enforcement in an area to encourage them to obey the speed limit.
While flashing your headlights may not be the best idea, there is nothing illegal about posting messages, etc. to alert other motorists to an area where we are working enforcement.
