San Jose Mayor Serves Homeless Dinner Christmas Eve

The Christmas Eve dinner is a standard tradition among the city's mayors, but Sam Liccardo stands out as a homeless advocate.

SAN JOSE, CA -- Mayor Sam Liccardo joined community advocacy group HomeFirst to serve a Christmas Eve meal to homeless residents at the Boccardo Reception Center in San Jose on Monday night.

HomeFirst, the largest provider of homeless services in Santa Clara County, was pleased to have Liccardo assist staff and volunteers in serving the Christmas Eve dinner to up to 250 shelter guests at the Boccardo Reception Center.

The mayor continues a long-standing tradition to volunteer and serve HomeFirst needs during the holiday season. Liccardo, a member of the HomeFirst Advisory Council, is a staunch advocate for solving the homeless crisis in San Jose, the group contends. He has working diligently on a variety of solutions to have 10,000 affordable homes available within the next few years.

HomeFirst is the service provider for the Bridge Housing Project, which will provide two sites with 40 sleeping units available to 80 individuals built by Habitat for Humanity. The units designed for those homeless and working have other facilities as well.

“We are very lucky to have a mayor like Sam Liccardo who is so invested in finding innovative solutions for housing and to end homelessness,” HomeFirst CEO Andrea Urton said. “Together with people like Sam we can truly partner to end homelessness.”

“I’m honored to help HomeFirst serve this special holiday meal and to spend some time with hundreds of our unhoused neighbors,” Liccardo said. “With the help of a large network of community partners, we’ve placed more than 6,000 people into permanent housing over the past four years. But we know there’s still much work to do. In the year ahead, I look forward to continuing to work with HomeFirst and other local nonprofits to advance innovative solutions to our homelessness crisis.”
