Where Should I Safely Stop When Getting Pulled Over?

This week's questions from Campbell Patch readers were answered by Campbell Police Captain Dave Carmichael.

Q: Where and when are you allowed to pull over when an officer is stopping you while driving? Do you have to stop immediately or can you wait until you are in a safe, well-lit area?

When a police officer activates their red light or orders you to pull over, you should do so as soon as you safely can.  It is good to pull into a parking lot or other well-lit area if there happens to be one next to you, but you should not take this to mean that you can drive an extended distance before safely pulling to the right side of the road and stopping.
