Taking the Big Leap Into Marriage on Leap Day

Only three couples made the big commitment on Feb. 29: It's complicated.

No wonder only three couples showed up at the Santa Cruz County Administration Bulding to get married on Leap Day, the 29th day of February, which only comes around every four years.

Just try asking the last pair of lovebirds to tie the knot in the building's courtyard on what day they will celebrate their anniversary.

"The 28th or the 1st," answered Claire Grosjean, 44, who married Danny Froeming, 47, at 4 p.m.

"The 29th," said her new husband, a fitness trainer in Saratoga. "Then we'll only celebrate every four years. That's great."

Claire, a financial officer at Silicon Valley Bank, took a more firm grasp.

"We'll celebrate it every day," she said.

The couple, who live in the Santa Cruz Mountains, have been engaged for five years and together for 10. They have two kids, 5 and 3, named Lucas and Lilly.

They decided a only a week ago to get married. So, why choose a day that only comes around every four years?

"Think of how much you save on cards," said Danny.

"We wanted it to be different," said Claire. "Valentine's Day would be too mainstream."

How will they celebrate their new wedded bliss?

"We'll go home and get the kids and go out to a nice dinner at the Cats restaurant," said Danny.
