5 Things for the Week Ahead: Tennis Tournament at La Costa and More
Worthwhile notes for residents of the Carlsbad area.

1- Top- seeded Marina Erakovic of New Zealand defeated Zoe Scandalis, a San Diego native who will be a junior this fall at USC, 6-2, 6-0, as singles qualifying play began Sunday for the $795,707 Southern California Open women's tennis tournament at La Costa Resort and Spa. Other winners included Nicole Gibbs, the 2012 and 2013 NCAA women's singles champion, Coco Vandeweghe, who reached the final of the 2012 Bank of the West Classic at Stanford, Alexandra Stevenson, a 1999 Wimbledon semifinalist, and Asia Muhammad, the older sister of Shabazz Muhammad, who was chosen by the Utah Jazz in the June NBA Draft, then traded to the Minnesota Timberwolves after playing one season at UCLA. The four winners of second-round matches will receive spots in the 28-player main draw. Main draw play will begin Monday. (City News Service)
