Carlsbad Unified Announces Partnership with MiraCosta College

Carlsbad Unified students can now take tuition-free courses from MCC during the school day for college credit.

CARLSBAD, CA - Carlsbad Unified School District (CUSD) and MiraCosta College (MCC) have established a Dual Enrollment Program and finalized a Use of Facilities agreement for the 2016-17 school year. High school students in Carlsbad Unified will now be able to take tuition-free MCC courses during the school day for college credit.

CUSD and MCC have established a successful history of collaboration and mutual support to provide students and local communities with exceptional educational programs and activities. MiraCosta College has been offering college courses on campus at Sage Creek High School (SCHS) for two years, and many CUSD students have taken college courses for credit towards their high school diplomas.

CUSD has been partnering with MCC to broaden advanced educational opportunities for students. This new Dual Enrollment Program will provide challenging academic and career preparatory experiences to qualified high school students in their junior and senior years. The courses will be conveniently located on the SCHS campus during the regular school day. This program will expand access to affordable higher education courses, because CUSD students who are California residents will be exempted from paying per-unit enrollment fees for up to 11 units. Additionally, it will enable students to meet high school graduation requirements while earning college credits at the same time.

“This new collaboration with MiraCosta College is a win-win for students,” said CUSD Superintendent Dr. Ben Churchill. “CUSD students who take college level courses on campus during the school day will be better prepared for the college experience, and, as a bonus, they will have already earned college credits.”

The dual enrollment courses will be governed by the policies and regulations of MCC. Carlsbad Unified will be the employer of the instructional staff, and will provide the facilities, equipment and supplies, and technology. The two institutions will jointly provide student and matriculation services, recruitment, and clerical staff.
