📰 News we're reading

1. Runner-up Eagles top section teams at Hamada Classic (eccalifornian.com) — Carlsbad wrestlers made a solid showing at the Jimmy Hamada Classic, with Roman Zelenka taking second at 138 pounds and Landon Nelms finishing fourth at 150 as the team placed 16th overall. The two-day, 51-team tournament at La Costa Canyon High highlighted early-season form for many San Diego Section programs, with Granite Hills finishing runner-up and several North County schools earning podium spots.

2. Year in review: The biggest San Diego music stories of 2025 (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad residents can take pride in hometown singer-songwriter Alex Warren, who went from being homeless locally at 18 to Billboard’s Top New Artist with multiple Hot 100 hits in 2025. His breakout year anchors a broader look at San Diego-connected musicians earning Grammys, touring globally, and entering music halls of fame.

3. State loan will bring rent-restricted housing to Oceanside apartment complex (sandiegouniontribune.com) — Carlsbad residents may notice that La Costa Towne Square is part of a growing network of affordable housing projects financed by state loans, even as Oceanside converts most units at its Sunterra complex into rent-restricted apartments. The Oceanside project will reserve at least 75% of units for income-qualified tenants and help the city meet state housing goals, while similar financing has supported Mirka’s Carlsbad development and others countywide.

4. Who's News: 12/26/25 (thecoastnews.com) — Carlsbad students are highlighted for making Belmont University’s dean’s list and for a Carlsbad-based Army and Navy Academy cadet presenting AI research at a major San Diego conference. The roundup also spotlights North County school clubs, food drives, toy donations, and a LEGOLAND-related STEM project involving local kids.
