Video: Crash at Carlsbad Intersection Injures Deputy and Carlsbad Resident

The crash at La Costa Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road closed the intersection most of the morning.

A San Diego County sheriff’s deputy was taken to Palomar Medical center with moderate injuries following a crash Friday morning at the intersection of La Costa Avenue and Rancho Santa Fe Road, according to a sheriff’s spokeswoman.

Early reports stated that the deputy was severely injured, but the sheriff’s department now says his injuries are "non serious."

The crash was reported at 9:47 a.m. Friday and shut down the roads in the area to investigate, according to a dispatcher. The Highway Patrol has issued a Sig Alert in the area.

Sgt. Steve Sutt with Carlsbad Police said, "A silver Mercedes and white Honda were turning westbound onto La Costa Ave. when apparently a sheriff's vehicle failed to yield to a red light we believe. He entered the intersection and struck the two vehicles as they made that turn."

Christine Stanley, 60, of Carlsbad was in the Mercedes and taken to Scripps Encinitas after complaining of pain.

The deputy Dustin Lopez is assigned to the San Marcos station and was reportedly on routine county business when the crash occurred.
