Future Scientists at Buena Vista Elementary Enjoy Hands-On Learning

The future scientists of Buena Vista Elementary School celebrated Science and hands-on learning at Science Day on Friday, January 17. 

Students learned about volcanoes, magnets, pressurization, surface tension, electrical circuits and projectiles as they squished play doh, lit light bulbs, propelled marshmallows from catapults, and released balloon rockets.

John and Toni Merrill, the owners of several Miracle Ear clinics in North County, presented “Your Amazing Ear” to the kindergarteners in Ms. Zak’s room.  Using a tiny camera and volunteers from their kindergarten audience, they projected a large image of the inner workings of the students’ ear, showed students what inner ears look like and explained how ears work. Students then made their own “ear drum” with a plastic cup, and hit a tin can over the cup to cause the “ear drum” to move.

“Children learn by doing,” said principal Tina Howard. ”Our students had a lot of fun today, and they learned about scientific principles at the same time. We thank our teachers, parents and members of the community for all they did to make this day possible.”

A Mad Science assembly, sponsored by the PTA, capped off a fun and engaging day.
