Oceanside Man Arrested After Carlsbad Pursuit

Carlsbad Police said officers noticed a suspicious car around 3:14 a.m. near Sage Creek High School.

CARLSBAD, CA -- An early Saturday morning pursuit in Carlsbad ended with a crash. Carlsbad Police said officers noticed a suspicious car around 3:14 a.m. near Sage Creek High School.

The car attempted to enter the secured parking lot, prompting the officers to conduct an investigative stop, police said.

The driver, identified as Matthew Gioia, 30, of Oceanside, fled westbound on Cannon Road towards College Boulevard. A short vehicle pursuit ensued until Gioia crashed into a tree, police said.

Gioia fled on foot, and was eventually taken into custody after a brief struggle with officers, police said.

Gioia was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and will be booked into the Vista Detention Facility for felony evading and resisting arrest, police said.
