Poll: Are Pediatricians Right to Back Circumcision for Babies?

Opponents including San Diego-based group call the procedure male genital mutilation.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has revived one of the biggest debates in health—whether infant boys should be circumcised. The leading group of baby doctors, revising earlier stances, now says the health benefits of circumcision outweigh the risks and that families who choose to circumcise their baby boys should be able to. That will upset San Diego’s Matthew Hess, who labels the procedure male genital mutilation and has a website urging laws be passed against it. (His Foreskin Man comic books have been labeled anti-Semitic, however.) Dr. George Kaplan of San Diego once was quoted as saying, “I don’t know any other procedure that generates as much literature, fury and passion.” What’s your stand?
