ALAMEDA COUNTY — Four students have been awarded $5,000 college scholarships by the Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame.
The youth scholarship recipients listed below will each receive a $5,000 scholarship:
- Daisy Fountaine (Oakland Technical High School, Oakland)
- Elizabeth Melendez Santos (Mount Eden High School, Hayward)
- Moragaut Souet-Samounn (San Leandro High School, San Leandro)
- Sesina Haile (Encinal Junior/Senior High School, Alameda)
Applicants were asked to articulate qualities that exemplify the spirits of former Alameda County Supervisors Mary V. King and Wilma Chan. The scholarships are funded through the Mary V. King/Wilma Chan Youth Scholarship Fund.
Applicants were also asked to demonstrate a record of achievements outside of high school academics, and articulate their work or community service in areas that advance or improve the quality of life for women or girls and their families in Alameda County.
Students were also selected for their leadership skills, especially in instances where they had been a groundbreaker, role model or mentor to other girls.
Mary V. King was the first African American woman and Wilma Chan was the first Asian American elected to the Alameda County Board of Supervisors.
According to the Alameda County Women's Hall of Fame, "their dedication to learn, passion to address challenges, and strength to build partnerships resulted in practices and resources that benefit the families of Alameda County today and for the future."
The four scholarship winners will be recognized at the Alameda County Women’s Hall of Fame’s 29th Luncheon & Inductee Ceremony on May 4 at The Club at Castlewood in Pleasanton. Nine women inductees will also be honored.
