Firefighters Extinguish Fire At Abandoned Hayward Strip Mall
Fire officials said that there were some transients inside the building when the fire broke out.

HAYWARD, CA — Firefighters responded to a one-alarm blaze Wednesday night at an abandoned strip mall in Hayward, according to a Hayward Fire Department spokesman. The fire was reported at 9:26 p.m. at an abandoned shopping center in the 26000 block of Mission Boulevard near the Holy Sepulchre Cemetery, Hayward fire Captain Don Nichelsen said.
Six fire engines, two trucks and two battalion chiefs responded to the scene. Crews had the blaze under control in about 45 minutes and managed to contain the fire to its point of origin, Nichelsen said. Nichelsen said that there were some transients inside the building when the fire broke out, but there were no reports of any injuries.
Fire investigators have responded to the scene but have not yet determined the cause of the blaze. Firefighters will remain on scene until later this morning to ensure that hotspots don't flare up again, Nichelsen said.
