Nat'l Merit Scholarship Awarded To Castro Valley Student

The award from the University of Southern California is renewable for up to four years.

CASTRO VALLEY CA — A Castro Valley high school senior, who graduated last Friday, was awarded a National Merit Scholarship financed by the University of Southern California, the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced Tuesday.

The award will provide between $500 and $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study at USC. The exact award was not disclosed.

Samuel G. Hiester, who graduated from Castro Valley High School, plans to study Electrical Engineering at USC.

This year, 149 higher education institutions are underwriting awards through the National Merit Scholarship Program.

One final group of 2024 National Merit scholarships will be announced next month.

This year's awards of $26 million are going to more than 6,870 students nationwide.
