At about 1:50 p.m. this afternoon, Pleasanton police officers were investigating an auto burglary in the Stoneridge Mall parking lot. During the investigation, a witness provided officers information on the vehicle and the two suspects involved.

Within 10 minutes, a second officer located the vehicle — a 1987 light green Buick LeSabre with a California license plate of 3CXF268.

The officer initiated a traffic stop on the vehicle and ordered Gamez to turn off the ignition. Authorities said Gamez refused to obey the officer’s orders and drove out the mall lot onto northbound Foothill Road.

The officer pursued the car as Gamez continued onto westbound I-580. A second Pleasanton patrol unit joined the chase.

The chase continued through moderate traffic on I-580 and at one point reached speeds of 100 miles per hour.

Shortly after CHP assistance was requested by Pleasanton police, the vehicle collided with the center concrete barrier about one-fourth of a mile east of the Castro Valley Boulevard exit.

The vehicle flipped over and ended upside down on its roof.

I-580 traffic and BART service was stopped for about five minutes while the suspects were taken into custody.

The police department is still working to identify property located in the suspects’ vehicle. Police are also investigating the suspects’ possible involvement in today’s auto theft.
