Volunteers Build Playground At Eden Area YMCA

The new site will help children over 5 find a safe place to play outdoors. How much outdoor play does your child get and where is the closest safe place?

More than 200 volunteers got together last Friday to build a new playground for children over the age of 5 at the Eden Area YMCA.

The effort was led by KaBOOM!, a nonprofit dedicated to helping communities build playgrounds.

KaBOOM! is on a mission to erase a "play deficit" that hurts kids physically, socially and cognitively.

Today’s kids spend less time playing outdoors in part because only one in five children live close to a safe park or playground, the group says.

The new playground at Eden Area YMCA will provide more than 750 children with that safe outdoor place.

The local project is among the 150 playgrounds nationwide that KaBOOM! will help build this year, and the group's third partnership with Shutterfly.
