It began when a Uber driver heading north on the 405 Freeway told officers his car suddenly lost power, according to Kimball. That driver was struck from behind by a vehicle. A third vehicle then rear-ended the second car.

According to the CHP, the force of the collision sent the first vehicle across the center divider into the southbound 405 lanes. The CHP then shut down the carpool, and Nos. 1, 2 and 3 lanes because of the crash.
