Sheriff's arson investigators today worked to determine if a non-injury fire at a house in Cerritos was caused by a resident using butane to extract concentrated oil from marijuana, authorities said.
The fire in the 19200 block of Cecelia Place was reported at 9:19 p.m. Friday, said Andre Gougis, a Los Angeles County Fire Department supervising dispatcher.
Firefighters were on scene at 9:24 p.m. and had the fire knocked down by 9:30 p.m., Gougis said.
"There was some butane found and (investigators) believe that was the source that ignited the fire,'' said Lt. George Berumen of the Cerritos Sheriff's Station. Butane can be used to extract a concentrated liquid called honey oil from marijuana, he said.
No marijuana was immediately located and no arrests had been made as of early this morning, but sheriff's arson investigators were on scene, Berumen said, adding that it appeared the home was being rented out by its owner.
